Keep up the good work. You are in my prayers! To "lengthen" the hat so it fits over the ears just knit an extra couple of inches before you start the decrease for the top. If you are knitting top down just knit a couple extra inches before you start the beading. I actually like the car on the mittens done in duplicate stitch. I know that is a pain, but it makes the car stand out from the mitten. It's so hard to watch an older pet failing!! We have had that happen to us and we waited too long to let her go.
